Six towns carry a page under this one, tucked into the bluffs of the state’s far southeast corner, and Houston County covers 552 square miles of ridge and valley. An order placed early enough is arranged by hand and driven out the same working day, Monday through Saturday. Sunday is the one day nothing moves.

Six ZIP codes serve the six Houston County towns and they line up cleanly: 55921 at Caledonia, 55947 at La Crescent, 55974 for Spring Grove, 55943 at Houston, 55941 for Hokah and 55919 at Brownsville. Getting the code right does more work in this county than in most, because the valleys mean two towns eight miles apart on the map can be a long way apart on the road.
Under the code, the address itself needs a house number and a road name rather than a route box. Ridge addresses in particular are hard to find in the dark, so a landmark helps: a barn, a mailbox color, the turn after a creek crossing. Add a contact number and the number of attempts drops to one.
For an institution, name the building and the wing. Tweeten Lutheran Health Care Center in Spring Grove and La Crescent Health Services both take deliveries at a front desk and hold them for the resident, and both prefer a resident name that matches their own list rather than a nickname the family uses.
There is a town called Houston inside this county, and it is not the county. The town has a page of its own covering its own streets under 55943, separate from the wider page you are reading now. An envelope addressed only Houston, MN could mean either, and the seat is at Caledonia several miles south of the town.
The rest of the towns sit around the edges. La Crescent is up against the river crossing, Caledonia holds the middle, Spring Grove is out west, and Hokah and Brownsville take the low ground. Each of the six has its own page beneath this one.
Only 18,352 people live across the 552 square miles, which makes this one of the quieter corners of Minnesota to deliver into and one of the slower ones to cross. Pages next door pick up where the lines fall: Fillmore County, MN lies directly west, and Winona County, MN continues upriver to the north.
Houston County keeps Central time from one end to the other, river valley included. An order placed before 1 PM Central time is passed to a florist and goes out that working day; one placed later is scheduled for the next. That hour is measured where the flowers land, not where the card is written, and senders two zones away lose two hours to it.
Flower delivery runs Monday through Saturday. Sunday is not available in any of the six towns, so a Sunday service at a church in Hokah needs a Saturday arrival and somewhere in Minnesota to keep the arrangement overnight. Most funeral homes will do exactly that if you ask them when you call about the visitation.
Arrivals fall between 9 AM and 7 PM. A morning or an afternoon can be requested and a florist will work toward it, but it is a preference rather than a booking. In peak weeks the same-day list closes earlier than the usual hour, and an order for a Caledonia address placed at noon in one of those weeks may be scheduled for the next morning instead.
A florist buying for Houston County works a small market, and in February that market is smaller still. The substitution policy is written for exactly that: an individual flower can be exchanged for another of the same standing, and the arrangement it belongs to does not change in size, in shape or in value.
It is the honest version of what every florist actually does. The alternative, quietly building something thinner and hoping nobody notices, is what the policy exists to rule out. If a stem is swapped, it is swapped upward or sideways, never down, and the piece the recipient receives is the piece that was paid for.
The delivery photo is how you check it. A picture of the finished arrangement is taken after it is built and sent at no extra charge, which means a sender in another state sees the actual object rather than the sample. On a page about a county this far from anywhere, that photograph is the most useful thing on offer.
The recurring mistake is buying by price and discovering the shape is wrong. A tall design going into a care room at Valley View Healthcare and Rehab has nowhere to stand, and it gets moved to a corridor. A low vase in the same room sits on the tray table where the resident can actually see it.
Houses run the other way. A hall table or a sideboard in a Brownsville farmhouse will carry something with real height, and a small vase there disappears against the furniture. Read the destination first and the design second, and the whole decision becomes easy.
For a service, the rule is different again. Standing work belongs where a room full of people can see it from the back, which is a size question rather than a taste question, and the funeral home will tell you what fits their space if you ask.
Away from the sad orders, most of what comes through for Houston County is birthdays, anniversaries and the occasional get well. Those are forgiving. There is no service time to hit and the recipient is usually at home, so an order placed at eleven that arrives at four has done everything it needed to do.
A get well piece going to a hospital is the one to keep small and to send early, because a short stay means a discharge before the afternoon. A birthday piece going to a house in Spring Grove can be as tall and as bright as you like, and it will still be on the table a week later.
Every design in the catalog is shown with the size it is built at, which makes the height question answerable in a few seconds. The Minnesota county index lists the rest of the state, and it is worth a glance if the address you were given sits close to one of the lines described above.
