Twenty towns and the 458 square miles of Washington County are a lot of ground for one page, so the shape you pick should suit a car journey as much as a room. Low, well packed work rides better than tall work. A boxed piece with its own water source needs nothing at the other end. That decision comes first, before dates or addresses.
Every arrangement we build is listed with its height and its container on the arrangements page. Reading it by size rather than by name is the quickest way to a sensible choice, particularly if you have never seen the room the flowers are going into and are working entirely from a street address.
The recipient notices three things: whether it fits the table, whether it needs a vase, and whether it lasts. Color comes fourth and season comes fifth. Answer the first three in the order notes and the arranger will do something sensible with the other two on your behalf. Very few senders regret choosing the smaller of two designs, and quite a lot regret the other way round.
Flower types may be substituted for what the florist actually has, and the utmost care is taken to keep the result close to what was ordered. The size does not change, the shape does not change, and the value does not change. A swap is a swap of stems, never a quiet reduction in what turns up.
Western Maryland runs a season or two behind the coast, so the varieties in a cooler at Hagerstown in early spring are not always the ones pictured. That is the ordinary case for a substitution and it is nothing to worry about. The uncommon case is a specific flower that carries meaning, and that is worth flagging in the notes. A Washington County order placed in February and a Washington County order placed in June will meet very different coolers.
A photo of the finished piece is sent after the florist has built it, at no extra charge. It is the closest thing to standing in the room, and for a sender several states away it turns an invisible transaction into something they can actually check before the recipient has even said thank you.
About 157,228 people live in Washington County, and the great majority of them are in and around Hagerstown. Williamsport and Boonsboro hold the south, Smithsburg the north east, and Hancock sits alone at the far western end where the state narrows.
Between them sit Sharpsburg, Keedysville, Funkstown, Maugansville and Halfway, along with names such as Wilson-Conococheague and Paramount-Long Meadow that confuse an address field more often than they should. Each town keeps its own page with its own postal codes, which is the fastest way through if you already know where you are sending. Ordering from this page instead simply hands the geography to the arranger.
The codes here run from 21713 at Boonsboro through the 21740 and 21742 blocks around the seat, out to 21795 at Williamsport and 21750 at the western end. Hagerstown alone uses several, so a code is not a nice extra on an order into Washington County; it is the field that decides which end of the map a route begins at.
Then there is the second line. An apartment number, a suite, a floor, a gate code, or the fact that the office closes at four: every one of those is invisible to whoever is delivering unless somebody types it. The notes field exists for that, and it is read before the driver leaves rather than after the first failed attempt.
Orders placed before 1 PM Eastern time reach the recipient the same business day. That hour is measured where the flowers land, not where the card is written, so a sender in the pacific zone is really working to 10 AM at home. Setting the order up the previous evening removes the arithmetic entirely.
We deliver Monday through Saturday between 9 AM and 7 PM. Sunday flower delivery is not available anywhere in Maryland, which is worth knowing before a Sunday service or a Sunday birthday in Washington County, since the only answer is to send on the Saturday. Around the four main flower holidays the same day line moves earlier, sometimes well before midday.
A requested time can be passed to the florist but never fixed, and on a county this wide that is an honest limit rather than a hedge. The stretch out to Hancock is long enough that a promise about a particular hour would be a promise about traffic, and nobody can make that one truthfully.
Meritus Medical Center takes flowers for patients, and Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home at Boonsboro takes them for residents, but the two want different things. A hospital room needs something a nurse can move with one hand. A care home room, where somebody may be settled for months, is better served by a planted piece that keeps going. Either way, put the resident's full name and the wing in the notes, because a first name at a busy reception in Hagerstown, MD will not route anything.
Sympathy work sent to a service should be at the venue early, and the notes should name the building rather than the town. Sent to a house instead, keep it modest. A family fielding visitors all week does not need a piece that requires its own side table, and a low bowl says the same thing more quietly.
Because flowers are perishable, anything that looks wrong needs raising within three days of arrival. The remedy is a replacement, a refund or a partial credit, whichever fits. Beyond these towns, Frederick County, MD lies east over the mountain, Allegany County, MD continues west past Hancock, and Franklin County, PA begins just north of the line. Every other county is listed on the Maryland county index.
