This county holds new subdivisions and old farm roads at the same time, and the two kinds of address fail in opposite ways. A house on a street laid out last year may not be findable by number alone, so a builder's plot reference or a nearby cross street helps. A farm address wants a road name and a mailbox instead. Both want a telephone number for the recipient.
Institutions want a name. Dallas County Hospital takes arrangements at reception with a patient name and a room number, Perry Lutheran Home and Perry Lutheran Homes Eden Acres Campus are two separate buildings in the same town, and Spurgeon Manor is a third in another town again. Ten ZIP codes cover the ground, from 50263 at Waukee out to 50220 at Perry and 50003 at Adel.
Workplaces are the third kind, and there are a great many of them here. A business name, a floor and a department get an arrangement past a front desk that handles a lot of deliveries. Without them a piece sits in a mail room, which is the one place a fresh arrangement should never spend an afternoon.
Photographs flatten scale, and the commonest complaint anywhere is a design that is right in every respect except size. A tray table in a hospital room takes something compact and already in water. A reception counter takes height. A kitchen table at a house in Redfield takes whatever the sender likes, so long as people can see over it.
Once the size is settled the rest is easier. The arrangements are set out by size and occasion, which is the useful way to read them, and naming two colors that work together gives a florist near the address more to work with than a single variety would. Season decides the rest, and a February order in Iowa draws on a narrower market than a June one.
Ten towns keep pages of their own beneath this one. Waukee and Adel sit in the east, Perry in the north west, and Van Meter, Redfield and Dexter to the south, with Granger, Woodward, Dallas Center and De Soto between them.
Flower types may be substituted for what the florist has available on the day, and in a county growing as quickly as this one the volume of orders makes that more likely, not less. The arrangement itself does not change. Size, shape and value stay exactly where the order put them, and the substitute is chosen to keep the piece as close to the ordered design as can be managed.
A picture of the finished arrangement is sent to the sender at no extra charge once it is built, which is where any substitution becomes visible rather than hidden. Anything that looks wrong in it has three days from the delivery to be raised, since cut flowers are perishable, and a replacement, a refund or a partial credit are the ways the matter gets closed.
The line is 1 PM Central time for a same day delivery in Dallas County. Deliveries are made Monday through Saturday, Sunday is not one of them, and arrivals fall between 9 AM and 7 PM. A time can be requested in the notes and a florist will work toward it, but it is a request and not a booked slot.
The wide window matters more here than in a rural county, because a great many recipients are out at work until the evening. A home address in Van Meter or Granger at four in the afternoon may well be empty, while a workplace address at the same hour is not. Choosing between the two on the basis of the hour, rather than the sentiment, is what gets an arrangement into somebody's hands.
Sympathy orders divide by destination. Standing designs and casket work go to the building holding the service and need to be there before the family, which means the order is placed the day before rather than on the morning. Johnson Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Dexter and Ernst Funeral Home in Waukee are both named places in this county, and each wants the family name on the order.
Flowers for the house are a separate order with no deadline attached, and they often do more a week later than on the day, when the counters are clear again. A Sunday service is the awkward case, since Sunday delivery is not available, and the Saturday before it is the only way to have flowers in the room when the family arrives.
A county with this much new building is also a county full of people who are new to it, and that shows in sympathy orders placed by somebody who has never been to the town. Naming the family, the building and the town in the notes closes that gap, and in this part of Iowa it works far better than an address copied out of a message and hoped over.
Birthdays and anniversaries are the orders worth placing early, because the date is fixed and the choice of container is widest at the start of the week. New baby arrangements are the opposite, decided in a morning, and a home address after the discharge is usually the safer bet than a hospital room that may already be empty by the afternoon.
Peak weeks are the exception to all of it: around Valentine's Day and Mother's Day the same day cutoff can fall earlier than one o'clock. Each of the ten towns under Dallas County keeps its own page, and the neighboring pages take over at the line, with Polk County, IA to the east and Guthrie County, IA to the west and Boone County, IA to the north, plus the full list at Iowa county flower delivery.
