Harris County, GA Flowers by Town

Eight towns sit beneath Harris County, from Hamilton at the county seat out to Pine Mountain, Shiloh and Waverly Hall, and each of them keeps a page of its own. The county spreads across 464 square miles, so the town on the order matters as much as the street, and every arrangement is made up by hand near the address it is going to.

Harris County and the Eight Towns It Holds

Eight towns and seven ZIP codes make up Harris County, which is more separate places than a county of 464 square miles usually carries. Hamilton is the county seat. Pine Mountain sits at the northern end, Waverly Hall to the east, Cataula and Ellerslie south of that, with Shiloh, Antioch and Piney Grove filling in the rest.

The ZIP codes are 31804, 31808, 31811, 31822 and 31826 among others, and a sender who has one of them on an envelope already knows more than the county name gives away. Each town page underneath lists what we hold for that place. This page is the level above, written for the sender working from a county on a card and a surname, which is how most sympathy orders start out in GA. It exists so the order does not have to begin with a guess about which town is nearest.

Choose the Piece Before the Color

Deciding what to send is easier if the shape is settled first. A vase arrangement travels well, sits on any surface and keeps going for a week or more with fresh water. A basket suits a household with children in it. A standing piece is for a service, needs floor space and is meant to be looked at once. Getting that wrong is the difference between a gift somebody uses and an object they have to find room for.

Once the shape is settled, color is mostly free choice, and the arrangement catalog shows each design at the size it is sold in rather than at the size it photographs. What is worth thinking about instead is scent. A room at Oak View Home in Waverly Hall is shared space, and something heavily perfumed is imposed on more people than the recipient. Light and low is the safer instruction there, and it costs nothing to write it down.

Coverage Beneath This Page

This county is long rather than compact by Georgia standards, and the drive from Pine Mountain to the southern ZIP codes is a real journey rather than a hop. That does not change the deadline, but it does change how much slack there is in the afternoon, and an order placed at noon for an address at the far end has less room in it than one placed at nine in the morning at the other end of Harris County.

Two of the counties next door are in another state entirely. Chambers County, AL lies across the western line, and Lee County, AL reaches away to the south west of it, both with their own pages and their own deadlines. On the Georgia side, Troup County, GA sits north west, Meriwether County, GA lies east, and every county in Georgia is listed on the state page above this one.

The Cutoff, the Hours and the Days

One sentence covers most of it: an order in before 1 PM Eastern time goes out the same business day. Eastern time is the recipient's zone, not the sender's, so a sender two time zones west is working to a late morning deadline at home. Flower deliveries run Monday through Saturday. Sunday delivery is not available in any of the eight towns, which is the fact senders most often discover too late to do anything about.

Arrivals fall in the window between 9 AM and 7 PM. That is long on purpose, because a florist covering both ends of Harris County builds a route rather than a timetable. An hour can be requested and often lands close to it, but it is a request. In the four peak holiday weeks the same-day deadline can move earlier than 1 PM Eastern time, so ordering a day ahead is worth more than any note on the order itself.

Sympathy Flowers and Funeral Arrangements

A death in a small county is announced by word of mouth long before anything is printed, and the sender is often the last to know. Two questions decide the order: where the service is being held, and when the family will be at the building. A piece for a visitation has to be there while people are arriving, and a piece for a home in Hamilton or Cataula is better sent in the week afterwards.

If the service falls on a Sunday, the arrangement has to be delivered on the Saturday, and it will keep. Sending to the house rather than the service is also worth considering when the sender does not know the family well: it arrives without an audience and it lasts. Either way, the address needs the recipient's name as the household uses it, not the name that appeared on the notice, because the two are often different.

The choice between a service and a house is really a choice about who sees it. A spray at a service is public and short lived; a vase at a house is private and lasts a fortnight. Families in Harris County often receive more of the first than one afternoon can hold, and very little of the second in the weeks that follow, which is when the house is quiet and somebody actually notices flowers. Sending late, deliberately, is not a mistake.

Substitution Without a Change of Size

Flower types can be substituted for whatever is available to the florist that morning. What does not change is the arrangement itself, which keeps the size, the shape and the value that was ordered, and the utmost care goes into keeping it close to the item chosen. A specific variety is a preference rather than a specification, and writing it in the notes gives the florist something to aim at.

A photo of the finished arrangement is sent once the florist has made it, at no extra charge, and that picture is the actual flowers rather than the catalog image. If anything looks wrong, three days from the delivery is the window for saying so, because flowers do not wait. A replacement, a refund or a partial credit are the ways an order in Harris County gets settled, and none of them need a phone queue to start.
