Flowers Down the Keys in Monroe County, FL

What happens between the order and the doorstep

An order for Monroe County reaches a florist working near the recipient, who builds the piece by hand and takes it out to the address the same day where the deadline allows. Nothing is shipped flat in a box for someone else to assemble, and nothing sits in a depot overnight. Once the arrangement is finished, a photo of the actual piece is sent at no extra charge, and on a chain of islands that photo does more work than it would anywhere else, because the sender is usually a long way off and has no other way of knowing what turned up at the door. If something is wrong with it, the window for saying so is three days from the delivery, which is short on purpose: cut flowers cannot be judged fairly a week after they arrive. Between those two things, ordering blind into a place you have never driven stops being a leap of faith. Flowers sent into Florida from out of state travel this way in every county, and the Keys are simply the clearest case of it.

Substitution, and what a supply run down the islands means

Flower types may be substituted for what the florist has on hand, with no change to the size, shape or value of the arrangement. Anywhere in Florida that sentence is honest rather than defensive, and in Monroe County it earns its keep, because every stem that ends up in a vase in the Keys has already come down the length of the state by road. What it means in practice is narrow and worth knowing. The type of arrangement, its dimensions and the amount paid are all fixed when the order goes in. What can move is one variety inside the design, swapped for another of the same color, weight and job, with the utmost care taken to keep the finished piece close to the one you chose on screen. A rose count does not quietly shrink, and a tall design does not come back as a low bowl.

Twelve towns and the postal codes that go with them

Deliveries run to Key West, FL in 33040 at the southern end, north through Marathon, FL in 33050 and Islamorada, Village of Islands, FL in 33036, up to Key Largo, FL in 33037 and Tavernier, FL in 33070 at the top of the chain. Big Pine Key, Cudjoe Key, Big Coppitt Key, Stock Island, Duck Key, Key Colony Beach and North Key Largo fill in the gaps between them. Eleven postal codes cover the whole of Monroe County, which is a small set of numbers for a place this long, and a code is worth more than an island name on the order form, because neighboring islands share mailing addresses and the number is what a driver reads first. Each of those places has a page under this one with its own codes on it.

The drive between the two ends

The county holds 983 square miles of land and about 81,000 people, and those two figures together explain most of what is different about sending flowers here. The land is not a block, it is a line, so a florist near one end of the chain is genuinely far from the other, and an address at the top and an address at the bottom belong to different runs on the same day. That is the practical reason the deadline bites harder here than it would in a compact county of the same population. Give the island, the postal code and a phone number for the recipient. If the address is a marina, a resort or a holiday rental, add the slip, the room or the unit as well, because a front desk that has never heard the name will refuse the handoff and the flowers will spend the afternoon behind a counter. Both of those figures come from the census, and both are worth a glance before anyone assumes a Monroe County address is a short hop from the last one.

The 1 PM cutoff, and the zones between here and the coast

Orders placed before 1 PM Eastern time reach the recipient the same business day, and every address in Monroe County keeps Eastern time. A sender out on the west coast is three hours behind that clock and has lost most of the morning before the deadline even arrives, while a sender in the middle of the country gives up an hour. Flower delivery runs Monday through Saturday, and Sunday delivery is not available, so an occasion falling on a Sunday is covered by a Saturday order rather than by hoping. Deliveries land between 9 AM and 7 PM, and a particular hour can be requested without being promised, because the route is planned once the day's orders are in. In the weeks around Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Christmas and Easter the same-day cutoff can fall earlier than 1 PM, so those are the weeks to order a day ahead.

Sympathy flowers to a hospital or a funeral in Monroe County

Lower Keys Medical Center in Key West and Mariners Hospital in Tavernier are two of the named addresses on file for this county, along with Fishermen's Community Hospital in Marathon. An order to a hospital room needs the patient's full name and the floor, and a phone call to the ward first is rarely wasted, since intensive care units decline flowers almost everywhere and some wards accept cut stems but not soil. For a funeral, the hour is set by someone other than you, which is the argument for ordering the day before rather than on the morning. A standing spray belongs at the chapel, while a compact piece in its own vase belongs at the house. The full catalog shows every piece at the size ordered, and the larger sizes are more stems in the same shape rather than a redrawn design. This county meets Miami-Dade County, FL at its northern line and Collier County, FL across the shallow water, and the Florida delivery index lists every county page in the state.
