The county is long. The seat at Salinas holds 93901 in the north, the coastal towns sit a few miles west of it, and the southern end is more than an hour of valley road away. Salinas, CA takes the bulk of the volume, Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA on 93923 and Pacific Grove, CA sit on the coast, and King City, CA anchors the south. Each of those towns carries its own page with its own ZIP codes on it.
The town of Monterey has a page that is separate from this one, and the distinction is worth understanding before you order: Monterey, CA covers addresses inside the city itself, while the page you are reading collects the twenty-two towns across the whole county. Northward the line runs into Santa Cruz County, CA, eastward into San Benito County, CA, and the full state list is on the California delivery page.
Same-day delivery needs the order placed before 1 PM Pacific time, and Pacific is the recipient's zone rather than the sender's, which is the detail that catches out anybody ordering from the east. Flower deliveries run Monday through Saturday, there is no Sunday service, and arrivals fall between 9 AM and 7 PM. During Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Christmas and Easter the same-day cutoff can be brought forward, so treat those weeks as order-ahead weeks rather than same-day ones.
Where a stop lands inside the window depends on the route. A coastal address and a southern valley address are not on the same run, so an order placed early in the morning has more chance of a comfortable slot than one placed at noon. A particular hour can be written into the notes and it will be passed on, though it is a request rather than a fixed time. Fog on the coast makes no difference to the flowers, but it makes a difference to how fast a van moves.
Celebration orders have a simple rule: arrive on the day, ideally in the morning. A birthday sent to a house needs somebody in, or a neighbor named in the notes. A thank you sent to an office needs the company name, the floor and an arrival inside working hours. Anniversary flowers are the one order where roses are the right answer rather than a cliche, and a mixed seasonal design is the right answer nearly everywhere else because it lets the florist use the best of the week.
Weddings and large events sit slightly outside the normal range and are worth planning as several deliveries rather than one. A piece for the top table, a piece for a hotel room and a piece for a parent's house are three addresses and three times. Booking those a week out costs nothing and removes the risk of a holiday cutoff landing in the middle of it.
Shape is the decision that matters most and the one people spend least time on. A low bowl is made to be looked across on a table people eat at; a tall vase design is made to be seen from the other side of a room; a hand tie asks the recipient to own a vase. The arrangements page sorts by occasion, which settles the shape before color comes into it, and color is the shorter conversation of the two.
For a service anywhere in Monterey County, ring the chapel first and ask what hour they want flowers standing and where they want them set. A tall one-sided spray is built for a service room; a vase design or a planter is kinder at the family home in the days afterwards. For a resident at Canterbury Woods in Pacific Grove, keep the piece small, keep it in water and add the room number and a relative's mobile number to the notes.
Name the person who has died on the card as well as the sender. Where a chapel is handling more than one service, that line is the only thing routing the flowers to the right room, and a legible surname matters more than a long message. If several people are sending together, one larger design with every name on a single card is easier for a chapel to place than a row of separate baskets competing for the same table.
Flower types may be substituted for whatever the florist has in the cooler on the day, which in a county with a genuinely long growing season still varies week to week. The arrangement type is fixed: the size, the shape and the value stay exactly as ordered, and a swapped stem is matched as closely as possible in color and weight. Afterwards a photograph of the finished arrangement is sent to you at no extra charge, so the piece that actually went out is the one you see.
Coastal weather is the local wrinkle. Cool damp air is kind to cut flowers and unkind to nothing except a paper wrap, so a design that would tire in a hot inland county holds well here. Further down the valley the summer is warmer and drier, and there a piece built with closed buds lasts longer than one already fully open. Ordering by occasion rather than by flower gives the florist room to allow for both, which is why it is the advice we give across California.
Natividad Medical Center and Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital both want a unit and a room number in the delivery notes, and it is worth checking whether the ward takes flowers before ordering rather than after. Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula is the same on the coast, and Southern Monterey County Memorial Hospital covers the far end of the valley. For a commercial address, the company name and the floor or suite are what a lobby desk actually needs. A gated coastal drive needs the entrance and a code, or a phone number that somebody will answer.
