By the time an arrangement reaches a door in this county, a florist has read the order, built the piece by hand and driven it out. Nothing about it was packed, shipped or assembled in advance. That is the whole model, and every rule further down this page follows from it, including the one about substituted stems and the photograph you get at the end.

Substitution, and the size of what you bought

Flower types may be substituted for what the florist has available on the day. What does not move is the arrangement: the same type, the same size, the same shape, the same value. The care goes into keeping the finished piece as close to the item you chose as the week's supply permits.

Stated the other way round, you are buying a piece of a particular scale and character rather than a fixed list of stems. That is a better deal than it sounds, because it is what allows an order placed at noon in February to be built and delivered that afternoon instead of waiting for a specific flower to arrive from somewhere else.

What the florist does with your order

The order joins that day's run once it is built. Drew County covers 829 square miles of southeast Arkansas and holds around 17,000 people, so a run here takes in long stretches of road between stops, and where a given address falls in the day depends on the shape of the route rather than on anything settled in advance.

That is why arrangements are handed over between 9 AM and 7 PM and why nobody narrows that window on request. From the eastern states that leaves the early afternoon; from the Pacific coast, the late morning; from another continent, the sensible plan is to order the day before and stop watching the clock.

Flower deliveries run Monday through Saturday. Sunday delivery is not available, so an order taken after the Saturday run has closed will go out on the Monday. In the four peak holiday weeks the same-day cutoff can fall earlier than 1 PM, and ordering midweek is the simplest way around it.

Where the address sits inside Drew County decides the hour rather than the day. Monticello holds the hospital, both care communities and most of the households, so an order to the seat tends to fall earlier in the run than one out at Lacey or Wilmar, where the roads are longer and the houses further apart. The date does not move either way. What a line in the delivery instructions can do is tell the florist which half of the window suits the recipient, and on a workplace address in AR that is the difference between a handover and a second attempt the following morning.

Sympathy orders and what the notes should say

A service at Monticello or Wilmar needs its start time in the checkout notes rather than the visiting hours. The florist plans backwards from the hour the room has to be ready, and that hour is fixed days in advance while the rest of the arrangements are not. If the notice names a chapel or a graveside, put that in the delivery notes too.

Say too whether the piece is going on the casket or standing beside it. A full name plus a unit or room number is what keeps the arrangement moving.
